Except Gardaland and Mirabilandia (one on lake garda and the other near Rimini), in my opinions Italy doeasn't seem to have many thematic parks such as Disney, although a new one is just opening this month near Rome at Valmontone (about an hour away).
But people generally prefer to take kids to natural parks or didactic farms. I remember a few years ago when I went in the national park of Maiella in Abruzzo a group of the otters gave a real show in their river while we were behind a window in complete silence. The families and kids were amazed.
The same goes for the acquarium of Genoa which is the biggest in Italy and the classical zoos, now called 'bioparks'. Although there are many other places dedicated to kids; please see the link below.
In Pistoia, worth a visit is the Park of Pinocchio; All the classic characters from the story of Pinocchio by Carlo Lorenzini stiuated in the town of Collodi feature. Collodi was also the pen name of the writer.
The Abetone nature trail and a botanical garden in a forest can be visited in the high valley of Sestaione 4000 feet above sea level and covers 3.5 acres. This woodland hosts a wide variety of tree and plant species as well as a stream and all the species of flora present in the mountains of Pistoia.
